There’s a Career Fair on campus next week! This one is the biggest campus career fair of the year, and there is almost certain to be at least one employer looking to hire an iSchool student. That could be you! To make the most of it, take advantage of some simple preparation strategies.
- Review the information about the fair, including the employers list, to identify which employers you want to visit.
- Do your homework. Research those employers you selected in advance, search on LinkedIn for iSchool alumni who might work there that you can reach out to in order to jump start your networking, and look at what positions the company currently has available.
- There are resources to help you prepare, take advantage of them! The Career Center holds an abundance of online career fair resources on their website, and is also offering some events and workshops that will help you prepare as well (see the list below).
- Make some notes about who you are and what you offer to be prepared to talk to recuiters and potential employers. What makes you uniquely qualified? What value do you offer? What are your strengths? More than just your skill set, think about how your work mission and values combine with your skills to make you a committed and passionate potential employee. Practice this pitch out loud before the fair.
- Make an appointment with Janet (mattaj@uw.edu) for additional tips and support and answers to your questions if you need.
- Attend! You can’t reap the benefits of the networking opportunities that will be abundant at this fair without showing up! Dress professionally, bring copies of your resume in a folder, print business cards for yourself if you’d like, and go with your classmates if that makes you feel more at ease.

Roger K. Summit Scholarship applications are due by April 30
March 15, 2012 (Ann Arbor, MI) — ProQuest is seeking applicants for its 2012 Roger K. Summit Scholarship. Open to applicants from around the world, the US$5,000 award is given annually to a promising graduate student in library and information sciences. The winner will be announced at the Special Libraries Association’s 2012 Annual Conference to be held July 15-18 in Chicago, Illinois, in the U.S.
“It’s inspiring to review the applicants for the Scholarship each year,” said Anthea Gotto, ProQuest Vice-President of Global Training. “Their vision for the information profession is continuously evolving. These exceptional students are helping our profession to become more exciting, more innovative and enabling it to reach deeper into business and society than ever before.”
The Summit Scholarship is named for Dialog founder Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing the technology behind online information retrieval. Established in 1993, it continues as part of ProQuest’s commitment to support graduate education and engage the next generation of information professionals. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 30, 2012. To qualify, candidates must be enrolled in an accredited library or information sciences program.
