Looking for ways to get involved in the Information School? — Become a Student Representative on an iSchool Committee

The iSchool is seeking student representation for the following iSchool committees: Academics Council, Diversity, Facilities and Research.

As a committee member, you will be responsible for attending committee meetings to represent the student perspective, participating in committee activities and reporting pertinent committee topics to the iSchool Student Community. In addition, you will be asked to attend periodic Student Leadership Council meetings to update them on the work of the committee you represent. Serving on the committee is a great way to learn about what is happening in the iSchool as well as work closely with members of the iSchool faculty, staff and administration. Student Representatives will be selected by the Student Leadership Council. The deadline to submit your application is October 15. The application can be found at https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/ioss/112775. More details about what these various committees do and, if available, when they meet is included in the survey.

Conversations with the Dean

Each quarter Dean Bruce holds informal meetings with small groups of iSchool students. These meetings are a chance for students to talk with the Dean about their experiences at the iSchool and the UW. There are two Conversations with the Dean scheduled for fall quarter:

  • Lunch with the Dean                           November 9, 12-1:30 pm
  • Online Chat with the Dean                December 9, 5:30-7 pm         (priority space for online MLIS and mid-career MSIM students)

Space is limited for both events. If you’d like to participate, send an RSVP to Sharon Talbert (stalbert@u…)

Save the U-PASS – important survey

23 04 2010

This recently came to us from the GPSS Student Transportation Taskforce:

Dear UW community,

The U-PASS program has experienced significant cost increases recently, but funding has not kept pace. The resulting $3.5 million funding gap will continue to grow unless the program is re-designed to meet the needs of the current UW community.

The Student Transportation Taskforce, a group of the Associated Students of the University of Washington and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, with support from WashPIRG, is conducting a university-wide survey on the transportation choices made by students, faculty, and staff. The information will be used to assess the transportation needs of the UW as the taskforce develops alternative funding models for the popular U-PASS program.

*Even if you have never participated in the U-PASS program*, please take this 15-minute survey and review the alternative models we’ve developed.

Your responses are critical to the future of the U-PASS program, and the provision of safe, affordable, and accessible transportation choices to the entire UW community.

All responses to this survey are confidential.

Thanks for your help!

Open Forum on Changes in Mary Gates Hall – April 21st, 4:30pm

16 04 2010

NOTICE: Open Forum for UW students, faculty, and staff to learn about upcoming changes in Mary Gates Hall

This summer, the University of Washington’s goal of serving students in a more seamless way will take another step forward. Construction in the Computing Resource Center on the first floor of Mary Gates Hall will begin in July to make possible the co-location of some programs in the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity and Undergraduate Academic Affairs. Programs that complement one another but currently are located across campus from each other will be housed in Mary Gates Hall, providing students a logical path to key student resources from the time they enter the University to the time they graduate.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to a public forum to answer questions about the upcoming moves and construction. The forum will be held Wednesday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m. in the Career Center on the first floor of Mary Gates Hall.

Addressing questions will be:

  • Sheila Edwards-Lange, vice president and vice provost of Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity
  • Eric S. Godfrey, vice president and vice provost of Student Life
  • Ed Taylor, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs
  • Kelli Trosvig, interim vice president and vice provost of UW Information Technology
  • Cynthia Fugate, associate dean of the University Libraries
  • A representative from the Office of Planning and Budgeting, Capital Resource Planning

Programs that will be co-located include:

  • The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity’s Counseling Services with Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support Programs in Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
  • The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity’s Early Identification Program, McNair Program, and Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program with the Center for Experiential Learning.

Technology Survey for UW Students

28 10 2009

UW Learning & Scholarly Technologies (LST) is conducting a survey of how and where students use technology to do their work as students as well as what students envision for the future. Their answers to this survey will help LST improve and expand technology spaces and services for students.  The survey is for UW students only.

The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. Participation in this survey is voluntary, and answers are confidential. At the end of the survey, students will have the opportunity to complete a separate entry into our drawing for a chance to win one of ten $25 gift certificates to the University Bookstore. The drawing will be held and winners will be notified by December 4, 2009. Questions about this survey should be directed to Cara Lane at cgiacomi at u…

The survey is available online at:

Residential MLIS, Day MSIM and Exec MSIM students have individual file folders for their mail. Coursework or tests being returned from classes are sorted by the specific class numbers. Returned coursework is kept for two quarters (the quarter the class is held and the quarter following) and is then destroyed. If you have problems finding your mail, ask Ann Warner Smith or Brooke Pederson for assistance. Please note: these file folders are for academic purposes only. What’s New at the iSchool?

1 10 2009

Those of you returning to the iSchool this fall may notice a few subtle changes.

Student Works on Display: The transformation on the fourth floor started last year with the gold walls and the Alumni Recognition Display. We’ve continued that tend by adding two photo displays as well as posters of work of students in all our programs. Our goal is to have both the photos and the posters change periodically.

Dean’s Office Display: Check out the new display on the 3rd floor stairwell landing outside of MGH 370. This new display highlights some of the research our faculty members are doing.

Wondering what the strange code is below the display? It is a QR code or matrix code. This is a way to tag physical items with a URL. Using the camera on your mobile phone, you can take a picture of the code and access the URL on your mobile device. In this case, the URL will take you to a site telling you more about the research items represented in the photographs on the display. So, get your camera phone and check it out.

Hey, where’s the GA Crew?: In order to use our space in Mary Gates Hall more efficiently, we are in the process of moving people to new office spaces. Some of the changes have already occurred and others will occur during fall quarter. The iSchool has acquired a large suite of offices on the ground floor (or as we call it, the garden level) of Mary Gates Hall. Several offices will be moving into this space including GA Crew, Academics, Finance, Human Resources and some of our research staff. Other office moves include the PhD suite into the old GA Space and MGH 416 (the old PhD suite) being converted into three individual offices and a work space for the Student Organizations.

Want to project your group project on a screen in the iSalon? Now you can! This summer the computer labs updated the plasma screens, and we repurposed one of the old ones and put it in the iSalon so that students can use it to practice presentations or for group meetings.

Speaking of the iSalon—a quick reminder that this is a community space for all the faculty, staff and students of the iSchool. It is your responsibility to keep the space clean. We ask that you wash your on dishes, clean up any spills, and label items you put in the refrigerator and throw them out before they spoil.
