Please join GPSS for our 5th Annual Higher Education Summit on Friday, Nov.

4th.  The theme of this year’s event is: *On Whose Shoulders: Who Pays For Higher Education in Uncertain Economic Times?  *We will examine Washington residents’ ability to attain an advanced degree at a public institution given rising student debt burden and less government support.  University of Washington President Michael K. Young will deliver opening remarks.

Conference: Ethical Considerations in Research Collaborations

The UW is host to a conference on the ethical conduct of research conducted in collaboration with industry, and in international, multi-cultural and interdisciplinary settings. Graduate students may apply for full scholarships to cover the cost of registration and may also submit abstracts that will be included in conference proceedings.

With internationally recognized presenters, the conference will provide graduate students with a strong foundation for building their research careers. The conference is in Meany Hall on the UW campus on September 22 and 23, 2011.

The IA Summit is the premier destination for those who practice, research and are interested in the structural design of shared information environments. Some call themselves information architects (and many don’t) but all share a common desire to help people live better lives through meaningful experiences with information.

The Summit is, above all, a community gathering. It is organized, planned and realized by volunteers across the information architecture and related communities of practice, with the kind support and backing from ASIS&T, and attended by people of all backgrounds with an interest to learn and share the lessons, challenges and opportunities presented in today’s digital landscape. Student Travel Grants for 2011 Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference in Austin, Texas

AIP Student Travel Grants – Accepting Applications

The American Institute of Physics is providing 2 generous travel grants for two students traveling to ER&L in Austin. The travel grant includes (1) Full conference registration, (2) air travel costs, and (3) Hotel accommodations totaling up to $1500 per winner. 2011 Student Travel Grant Applications are being accepted now and will be adjudicated by an ER&L volunteer committee.

Application Requirements: This grant is open to currently enrolled students wishing to attend ER&L 2011. Student applicants will be required to supply contact information as well as to answer a questions related to how access to ER&L can assist the applicant in achieving professional and academic goals.

Seventh Annual ARL Leadership Symposium

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) will host its Seventh Annual Leadership Symposium for master of library and information science (MLIS) students on Saturday and Sunday, January 8 and 9, 2011. Leadership Symposium curriculum focuses on topics related to the major strategic areas of ARL, as well as transitioning into, and building career networks in, research libraries. The program will include presentations from ARL program officers as well as human resource professionals in ARL member libraries. Registration for the Symposium is open to any MLIS student with an interest in a career in research libraries. The event is free of charge but space is limited!
