Event: UW iSchool Capstone

The UW Information School will be holding our annual Capstone event, showcasing the work of graduating Informatics, MSIM and MLIS students.

Where are the next great ideas in the information field coming from?  This year’s Capstone event may provide some answers. Capstone projects from the iSchool’s Bachelor of Science in Informatics, Master of Science in Information Management and Master of Library & Information Science programs are concrete examples of what it means to design and build novel applications of technology and innovative information tools and services. Capstone students provide solutions to information problems that people and organizations face every day, with projects ranging from mobile device applications to web-based library collection tools to browser security plug-ins.

All are welcome to attend – industry professionals and employers; UW and iSchool alumni, students, faculty and prospective students; and family and friends of the presenting students.  Guests are asked to RSVP for the Capstone Event at http://bit.ly/capstone12.

Reminder:  The University of Washington Information School 2011 Capstone Event is tonight, Thursday 6/2 @ 6:00pm at UW Tower.

Capstone projects from the UW Information School are concrete examples of how we design and build effective solutions to the information problems people and organizations face every day.

The Information School Capstone Event showcases projects from the University of Washington Information School’s Bachelor of Science in Informatics, Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM), and Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs.  The evening begins promptly at 6:00 pm with “Information Overload,” a lively round-robin of project introductions.  Following is an evening of poster presentations, networking and hors d’oeuvres.  Guests are invited to see how iSchool students have been using information as a tool for transformation in their academic, professional and personal lives. Capstone project collaborators include organizations from the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Project: Tracking Down the Port of Seattle’s Trucks

The Environmental Management Graduate Certificate Program is currently seeking graduate students to work on a Keystone Project sponsored by the Program on the Environment and the Port of Seattle to span the 2010-2011 Fall and Winter quarters. This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in sustainability, engineering, urban planning or transportation planning.

Tracking Down the Port of Seattle’s Trucks

Approximately two thirds of the freight that moves through the Port of Seattle each day does so via truck. As trucks wait in line at gates and roadways they emit greenhouse gases and particulate matter which contributes to local air pollution. The University of Washington and the Port of Seattle are hosting a two-quarter long Keystone Project during the 2010-2011 Fall and Winter quarters to determine what steps can be taken to minimize the impact of these trucks and better understand the trucks’ travel patterns.

Using GPS data captured from individual truck’s travel routings, as well other data sources including surveys, a team of students will evaluate the data to locate areas of inefficient operations, such as long waits in queues, quantify bottlenecks, and identify regional travel patterns. Under the guidance of Professor Ed McCormack (Civil and Environmental Engineering) this team of students will use GIS software and other analytical tools to evaluate truck data, gain experience, and learn about freight transportation planning at the local and regional levels.

Funding: UW Environmental Innovation Challenge (EIC)

WE HAVE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU.
If you’ve got a passion for clean-tech, the smarts to play in the emerging green economy, and the desire to leverage your engineering background to make an impact, the UW Environmental Innovation Challenge can provide just the platform (and the funding!) you’ve been looking for.

HOW IT WORKS
For the UW EIC, interdisciplinary student teams will define a clean-tech problem, design and develop the solution, and work together to produce both a prototype (or proof of concept or computer simulation) and a business summary that outlines the market opportunity.

We have $30,000 available for prototype funding. And we have industry mentors and coaches available to help students work through the process of getting their technology application to market. In the Challenge on April 1, students will pitch their concepts and demonstrate their product/idea to a group of judges that includes technologists, entrepreneurs, and investors. Teams are judged on their prototypes, business summaries, and potential for impact. The grand prize is $10,000.
