Funding: Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship

17 11 2011

The Graduate School is  pleased to announce the annual competition for the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship.   Mrs. Liebmann set up a trust fund to provide funding for graduate students of “outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study.”   The Graduate School will be able to send only three nominees to the national competition, and thus we are conducting an internal selection competition.

AWARD:  The fellowship provides an $18,000 stipend plus tuition and may be renewed for a total of three years of funding.

FIELDS:  Social sciences, humanities, natural sciences (as well as law, medicine, engineering, architecture).   The selection committee has a strong preference for supporting scholarly endeavors.

ELIGIBILITY:

Must be in an advanced degree program at the UW

Must be U.S. citizen

Must have outstanding undergraduate record

Must show financial need

Must have received baccalaureate degree

Must conduct studies and research in the United States

Please note that financial need requirement will be determined based on the FAFSA, which must be on file with the UW.  We will only consider students showing in the UW Financial Aid system with need (any level).  If you have not filed a FAFSA, please do so immediately if you wish to apply for this fellowship.  Information is here: http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/ (yes, you can file one now, even if you aren’t seeking aid for this year).  If the UW determines you don’t have need based on an initial review of the FAFSA, you can either 1) determine whether you can refigure your need requirement, which is definitely possibly through the Office of Student Financial Aid’s process, or 2) decide not to apply for the Liebmann fellowship.

APPLICATIONS:   full application information and requirements at the website noted below.

DEADLINE:    January 4, 2012, 5:00 p.m. (PST)

For more information about the fellowship and application process, please go to:   http://www.grad.washington.edu/students/fa/liebmann/index.shtml    or contact us at gradappt@u.washington.edu or 206-543-7152

Recruiting Graduate and Professional Student UW Bookstore Trustee

25 04 2011

We are currently recruiting for the position of Graduate and Professional Student Trustee to the UW Bookstore. In their role as student Trustee they act as a member of the UW Bookstore Board of Directors. This is one of the GPSS Special Committees as per our bylaws. What that means is that we deem this to be a committee of special interest to the graduate and professional student community. Based on this designation we do an extensive recruitment and vetting process to get a candidate who is committed to the unique role that the University Bookstore has in our campus community.

So what makes our Bookstore unique? First it is one of only two of its type in the country. It is a for-profit store where all of shares are held in trust for the students, faculty and staff of the UW. This means that the bookstores mission is provide high quality services to our community. Second is that the Board of Trustees, which also acts as the Board of Directors, is made up of students, faculty and staff of the UW except for one seat which goes to the CEO of the store, Bryan Pearce.
