ProQuest Invites Future Information Professionals to Apply for Annual Scholarship

Roger K. Summit Scholarship applications are due by April 30

March 15, 2012 (Ann Arbor, MI) — ProQuest is seeking applicants for its 2012 Roger K. Summit Scholarship.  Open to applicants from around the world, the US$5,000 award is given annually to a promising graduate student in library and information sciences. The winner will be announced at the Special Libraries Association’s 2012 Annual Conference to be held July 15-18 in Chicago, Illinois, in the U.S.

“It’s inspiring to review the applicants for the Scholarship each year,” said Anthea Gotto, ProQuest Vice-President of Global Training.  “Their vision for the information profession is continuously evolving. These exceptional students are helping our profession to become more exciting, more innovative and enabling it to reach deeper into business and society than ever before.”

The Summit Scholarship is named for Dialog founder Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing the technology behind online information retrieval.   Established in 1993, it continues as part of ProQuest’s commitment to support graduate education and engage the next generation of information professionals. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 30, 2012. To qualify, candidates must be enrolled in an accredited library or information sciences program. A panel of ProQuest information professionals will select the winner after reviewing academic achievement, interest in digital services and faculty recommendations.

iSchool Study Abroad

13 01 2012

Access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Ghana ranges from no access in many rural areas to access comparable to some major US cities. What strategies do people with low incomes use to connect to others and get the information they need? How does this impact their lives? We can get answers to these questions through research and direct experience. Whether you are interested in the uses and impacts of ICTs on the lives of people in developing countries or more generally in learning about how to do field research, this seminar is an opportunity to explore researched-based learning through immersion in the people and culture of Ghana.

In this seminar students will examine how people in different types of communities (urban and rural) use ICTs in their daily activities and how they feel about the impacts on their well-being. In contrast to historical notions of development where outside agencies determine goals with little input from the target populations, we will focus on development from the perspective of low-income populations. Students can apply the experience to their individual areas of interest, whether they be information systems, health, education, or other fields. The program will provide instruction and practical experience on using field research methods to investigate the role of ICTs in the livelihoods of low and middle-income populations. If you are interested in ICTs, development, or just want to learn more about conducting field research, weencourage you to apply! If you have any questions about the program, feel free to email us.

The course satisfies the research methods requirement for MLIS students (LIS 570) and Informatics Students (INFO 470).

Distinguished Librarian Award

22 11 2011

Funding: Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship

17 11 2011

The Graduate School is  pleased to announce the annual competition for the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship.   Mrs. Liebmann set up a trust fund to provide funding for graduate students of “outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study.”   The Graduate School will be able to send only three nominees to the national competition, and thus we are conducting an internal selection competition.

AWARD:  The fellowship provides an $18,000 stipend plus tuition and may be renewed for a total of three years of funding.

FIELDS:  Social sciences, humanities, natural sciences (as well as law, medicine, engineering, architecture).   The selection committee has a strong preference for supporting scholarly endeavors.

ELIGIBILITY:

Must be in an advanced degree program at the UW

Must be U.S. citizen

Must have outstanding undergraduate record

Must show financial need

Must have received baccalaureate degree

Must conduct studies and research in the United States

Please note that financial need requirement will be determined based on the FAFSA, which must be on file with the UW.  We will only consider students showing in the UW Financial Aid system with need (any level).  If you have not filed a FAFSA, please do so immediately if you wish to apply for this fellowship.  Information is here: http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/ (yes, you can file one now, even if you aren’t seeking aid for this year).  If the UW determines you don’t have need based on an initial review of the FAFSA, you can either 1) determine whether you can refigure your need requirement, which is definitely possibly through the Office of Student Financial Aid’s process, or 2) decide not to apply for the Liebmann fellowship.

APPLICATIONS:   full application information and requirements at the website noted below.

DEADLINE:    January 4, 2012, 5:00 p.m. (PST)

For more information about the fellowship and application process, please go to:   http://www.grad.washington.edu/students/fa/liebmann/index.shtml    or contact us at gradappt@u.washington.edu or 206-543-7152
