Event: UW iSchool Capstone

11 05 2012

The UW Information School will be holding our annual Capstone event, showcasing the work of graduating Informatics, MSIM and MLIS students.

Where are the next great ideas in the information field coming from?  This year’s Capstone event may provide some answers. Capstone projects from the iSchool’s Bachelor of Science in Informatics, Master of Science in Information Management and Master of Library & Information Science programs are concrete examples of what it means to design and build novel applications of technology and innovative information tools and services. Capstone students provide solutions to information problems that people and organizations face every day, with projects ranging from mobile device applications to web-based library collection tools to browser security plug-ins.

All are welcome to attend – industry professionals and employers; UW and iSchool alumni, students, faculty and prospective students; and family and friends of the presenting students.  Guests are asked to RSVP for the Capstone Event at http://bit.ly/capstone12.

Date: Thursday, May 31, 2012
Location: UW Tower, Mezzanine Level
Time: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Event: Graduate School Panel

7 05 2012

As we near the end of spring quarter, many students are starting to think (worry?) about where their lives will take them after graduation.  More and more we’re hearing the advice that a BA is not enough these days, that a graduate degree is needed to do higher-level, higher paid work. Is this even true?  And if it is, there are so many graduate programs to choose from, how do you choose? Should you go now or wait? How long should you take off from school before applying?

On Wed, May 9, from 3:30-5:00pm in Smith 105 the Sociology Department in partnership with the AKD Honor Society and the Career Center will be offering a special “Graduate School Panel for Sociology Majors” designed to answer these questions and more. We will have professionals on our panel who hold degrees from different programs often of interest to Sociology Majors (Sociology, Social Work, Law School, Public Administration, and Education) and who have first-hand knowledge about the current landscape and possible careers paths.
